"I just can't do math!" "I hate math!" "I dread math!"

We have all heard both children and adults utter such words. It is far more common to hear this expressed about math than any other academic subject.

What is Math Anxiety?

Math anxiety is the irrational fear and avoidance of math. It is defined as the "feeling of tension, apprehension, or fear that interferes with math performance." (Ashcroft 2002). The most common reaction to math anxiety is avoidance. Avoidance leads to less knowledge. Less knowledge leads to poorer performance and poorer performance leads to a higher level of math anxiety.(Ashcroft 2002, Furner/Duffy 2002, Johnson 2006)
